Tram extension announced again … this time with no funding!
South Australians should be extremely sceptical of yesterday’s announcement from the Weatherill Labor Government promising to extend the tramline along North Terrace, the Parade and into Magill.
The 2005/06 State Budget contained $300,000 for the extension of the tram from North Terrace to Brougham Place at a total cost of $30 million.
“A decade after the State Labor Government committed money to begin a $30 million extension of the tramline into North Adelaide we have another promise of another tramline extension,” said Shadow Transport Minister Corey Wingard.
“Inbetween we have been promised tramlines to Port Adelaide, Henley Beach, Grand Junction Road, Mitcham and a city loop tramline.
“None of those promised tramlines have funding budgeted for them either.
“If the Weatherill Labor Government was seriously committed to delivering this project, it would have provided funding for it in the State Budget.
“The Weatherill Labor Government has shown time and time again that it can’t be trusted to deliver what it promises.
“Why should South Australians believe the Weatherill Labor Government’s tram plan when they haven’t delivered short-term priorities promised in the 2013 Transport Plan handed down almost two years ago?
“Northern Adelaide residents have been left in the cold with the half-finished Gawler line electrification that has been announced and scrapped a number of times.
“As a consequence of the Labor Government’s failure to complete the Gawler line electrification taxpayers have been left $46.6 million worse off.
“Last year the Auditor-General identified the huge write-down as a consequence of the State Labor Government’s decision to indefinitely suspend the Gawler line electrification.”
