Mental Health Minister out of touch with local services

Mental Health Minister Leesa Vlahos has revealed just how out of touch she is by failing to
answer questions about the closure of the vital Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service
(CAMHS) at Marion.

Questions asked to the Minister in Parliament yesterday reveal that Minister Vlahos has
dragged her heels on the matter and is yet to speak with her own Department about the

Concerns about the closure of the Marion CAMHS centre were raised in the media on
September 23 with suggestions the service would be closed as part of planned cuts under
Transforming Health.

Whilst the Minister indicated she was aware of the media reports she refused to answer
questions about the closure of the service stating “I will seek a briefing”.

When pressed as to whether the Minister was responsible for the CAMHS operation within
Mental Health the Minister responded, “child and youth mental health services is something I
get reports on”, but failed to take responsibility for the service.

”'Concern among the public has been growing for a month and the Minister is yet to arrange
a briefing on this issue,” said Liberal Member for Mitchell Corey Wingard.

“This is not good enough.

“This is a vital service in my community and the Minister is letting down families who need
this service.

“It is clear that the Transforming Health cuts have resulted in the loss of so many services
that the Minister can’t keep track of what is closing.”
