Marion Mall Walkers Celebrate 16 years

It was an absolute privilege to share in the 16th birthday celebrations of an extremely popular local community group, the Marion Mall Walkers.

The group is so popular that on the morning of the 27th of February, friends, supporters and members of the Mall Walkers struggled to all fit in the one room for cake, coffee and lively conversation.

The Marion Mall Walkers formed in 2001. They meet on a regular basis every week to walk around the Westfield Marion Shopping Centre – a distance of about 2 kilometres per lap. The objective is to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle but there is also a very social element evidenced by the strong friendships between the walkers and the scheduled post-walk coffees at one of the many Westfield Marion coffee shops. As I overhead one walker say – their participation helps to make sure “the brain keeps ticking”. Keeping healthy and active is as much about a healthy and active mind as it is about a healthy and active body and the Marion Mall Walkers are successfully achieving both objectives.

Other guests who were also warmly welcomed included many members of the Westfield Marion Centre Management team, the office of the Federal Member for Boothby, Nicolle Flint MP, the Mayor of the City of Marion and the Member for Elder.  It was great to hear Westfield Marion Managing Director Malcolm Creswell speak on how much the Mall Walkers mean to the Westfield Marion precinct as well as the broader community. The sea of bright red Mall Walker t-shirts is a friendly sight to anyone who frequents the Westfield Marion Shopping Centre on those early mornings when the Mall Walkers meet.

I had the honour of presenting many members with certificates commemorating 15 years of Marion Mall Walker membership. Among these were Audrey Pratt, Margaret Adams, Pat Humbles, Joan Clifford and Pat Pudney. Congratulations to all of these members! I would also like to make a special mention of current President Martin Lewis and Secretary Jan Brine. Thank you for your hard work.

Finally, Leonie Castle received the Marion Mall Walkers ‘Walker of the Year’ Award. I am told Leonie is a pillar of the club and is always there for anyone in need of help. The women I was fortunate to share a table with agreed that it could not have been presented to a more deserving person.

Congratulations to everyone involved with the Marion Mall Walkers and Happy 16th Birthday! Your combined commitment, enthusiasm and fellowship have ensured the longevity of the club and I look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries will you in the future.
