$2.2 million raised by the government's fun tax!
In the 2013-14 State Budget the Minister announced a Public Transport Cost Recovery Measure which aimed to recuperate additional money spent on public transport to and from major events at the Adelaide Oval. This meant that public transport advertised as ‘free’ (The Footy Express) was actually being charged to event goers when they bought their tickets – regardless of which mode of transport they took to the event.
In Estimates the Government failed to deny they had raised $1.7 million more than budget from the Fun Tax in its first year. They failed to confirm during estimates the total revenue raised from the new tax and said they were “getting back to me’ to confirm it had raised ($2.2 million).
