South Australia’s surging unemployment rate highlights the lack of a jobs plan under this old, tired and arrogant Weatherill Labor Government.
“The Weatherill Government isn’t working and it isn’t delivering for the tens of thousands of South Australians looking for work,” said Shadow Minister for Employment Corey Wingard.
“South Australia is once again propping up the bottom of the ladder for unemployment with a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 7.3 per cent dwarfing the national unemployment rate of 5.7 per cent.
“5,000 jobs disappeared in South Australia during the last month.
“The Weatherill Government’s failed energy policies, its ESL tax grab and punishing water prices are strangling South Australia’s economy and jobs growth.
“The Weatherill Government’s jobs killing policies have resulted in South Australia having 8,800 fewer full-time jobs than in 2010 when Mike Rann promised to create 100,000 new jobs.
“Over the last seven years the only jobs growth in South Australia has been in part-time work.
“Unfortunately the Weatherill Government has had its head in the sand regarding the depth of the jobs crisis in South Australia.
In July last year Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis stated: “South Australians are through the worst of it. Our economies are coming out, there are green shoots all across this state.”
In January this year Automotive Transformation Minister Kyam Maher claimed: “There is still work to be done but we are heading in the right direction.”
“It is particularly concerning that youth unemployment (15-24 year olds) is running at 18.7 per cent up from 17.3 per cent last month.
“South Australia’s damaged jobs market is driving many young South Australians interstate in search of employment and condemning many of those who stay to the dole.”
“South Australians have little confidence in this tired and lazy Labor Government that has delivered the nation’s highest trend unemployment rate for the last 29 months.”
