I am often asked why my Electorate Office is on the second floor of a side street building with no street frontage and the short answer is .. “this is where the Government has hidden me”.
As a Candidate in the 2014 election campaign I chose a Campaign Office that was visible and accessible to residents on the corner of Sturt and Morphett Roads in Oaklands Park. After becoming the Member for Mitchell, I was astounded to find out that the Mitchell Electorate Office was not only not visible but also not very accessible to the people I represent.
I immediately made a formal request to Treasurer Koutsantonis for the Electorate Office to be moved to a more appropriate location. I made this request on the basis that Level 2, 1 Milham Street is “hidden, confusing and impedes communication between electors and their Member of Parliament”. Furthermore, from the onset, constituents were telling me they not only had trouble finding my office but they justifiably couldn’t find the entrance to the building when they did find it.
In my efforts to move to a more appropriate location, such as that of my campaign office, I have learnt that the Government signed a 6 year lease to Level 2, 1 Milham Street Oaklands Park 3 months before the 2014 election. Given South Australia’s poor financial situation, I cannot justify breaking this lease at the expense of the tax payer.
In October 2014, 6 months after my formal request to move, Treasurer Koutsantonis responded to my letter advising that Cabinet had rejected my request to move because the existing location is “considered suitable” and “meets minimum requirements”.
